The world's first heart transplant was performed by Dr. James Hardy in 1964 at University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Today, UMMC continues to make news by offering the state's only heart transplant program.
Nationally recognized cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons work with a specially trained team to give patients with failing hearts a second chance at life. The team includes the only three physicians in Mississippi who are trained and certified in advanced heart failure and transplant/cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Pre- and post-transplant medical management are available through our special clinics at University Physicians Pavilion and University Physicians - Grants Ferry. In addition to clinic services, a patient-led transplant support group meets each month.
For those in advanced heart failure, clinic care is overseen by a team of advanced heart failure cardiologists.
