Emergency Medicine

University of Mississippi Medical Center's adult emergency department (ED) is the only Level I trauma center in Mississippi. The ED treats about 65,000 adult patients annually, which is the highest emergency department volume in the state.

Additionally, emergency medicine care services also coordinate emergency room referrals to University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University Physicians' network of specialists and care providers.

As part of the state's only academic medical center, the UMMC emergency department offers high-quality emergency medical and trauma care to the people of Mississippi, outstanding training to medical residents and medical students and state-of-the-art clinical research in emergency medicine. The care team includes 18 physicians who are board certified in emergency medicine or are board eligible.

Medical control

The emergency medicine department also serves as medical control for the Central Mississippi Emergency Medical Services District, which provides medical oversight and support for ambulance services across the state. The central district, the largest EMS district in the state, covers 19 counties and 350,000 Mississippians.
