Education at UMMC

Education at UMMC

At the University of Mississippi Medical Center, our roots are in education. We began in 1903 at the University of Mississippi as a two-year school of medicine and founded a full four-year medical school on our Jackson campus in 1955. Our schools help fulfill UMMC's three-part mission of education, research, and healthcare every day as our students, residents, faculty, and staff work together to build a healthier Mississippi.

Our schools

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the state's only academic medical center. Our six schools provide Mississippi with physicians, dentists, nurses, medical technicians, therapists, and pharmacists.

Our graduates

We are working toward a goal of graduating 1,000 new doctors by 2025. And that number doesn't even include the thousands of students who will graduate in other areas of healthcare, from nurses, to dentists, to research scientists.

Most of our graduates live and work in Mississippi, which means that a healthier future starts right here at home. UMMC is working hard to ensure that all Mississippians - no matter how rural their communities - have access to physicians, dentists, and other vital healthcare services.

Our future

UMMC is working every day to build a stronger future for the health and economy of our state by:

  • Building a new, larger School of Medicine to accommodate more students - and graduate more doctors - each year.
  • Building a new Translational Research Center to improve medical research and educate future research scientists with hands-on, real-world experience.
  • Working with the state legislature to offer incentives for graduates to set up medical practices in Mississippi.
  • Providing scholarships and financial aid to students who want to practice medicine, dentistry, and associated healthcare services in their rural hometowns and other medically underserved areas of Mississippi.

Most of our graduates live and work in Mississippi, which means we are not only improving access to healthcare, but we are also positively impacting local economies by providing people with fulfilling, lifelong careers.
