Shared Governance is an organizational structure in which clinical nurses have a voice in determining nursing practice, standards and quality of care. Elected representatives participate in the following decision-making councils.

At UMMC, input from our dedicated nursing staff is at the heart of what we do. Please e-mail nursingexcellence@umc.edu with comments or questions to related to any of the below councils, and a representative from the council will get back with you.

Nursing Retention Council

This council identifies proven retention strategies, thoroughly evaluates current retention strategies, considers what new initiatives might be appropriate to increase nurse retention and makes recommendations about needed actions for the future.

There are two sub-councils reporting to this council.

  • Events and Recognition Sub-council

    Responsible for identifying strategies to provide recognition to our nurses. Also makes decisions and plans related nursing service events and recognition efforts.

  • Nurse Manager Sub-council

    Responsible for identifying strategies for providing support and resources to our nurse managers.

Research and Quality Council

This council's charge is to improve clinical outcomes through nursing research, evidence based nursing practice and quality initiatives. The vision of this council is to facilitate nurses making evidenced based decisions to improve quality care to our patients while optimizing the resources we have.

Professional Development and Education Council

This council's responsibilities are to encourage continued professional growth. This council oversees the professional development program, establishes standards for annual competency assessment, encourages achievement of certification and guides nursing education policy. Goals are to promote professional development opportunities through: Nursing Certification, Professional Development Program and Annual Competency.

There are two sub-councils reporting to this council.

  • Professional Development Program Sub-Council

    Responsible for managing the Professional Development Program and providing consultation to applicants seeking advancement in the PDP.

  • Education Sub-Council

    Responsible for developing nursing excellence through education.

Practice and Standards Council

This council provides oversight of nursing practice and standards at UMMC by reviewing practice decisions and approving all policies and procedures brought forward by a system of population specific sub-councils.

There are 11 sub-councils reporting to this council.

  • Pediatric Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the pediatric hospital population.

  • Wiser Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the women and infants hospital population.

  • Nursing Clinical Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to any clinical procedures relevant to all populations.

  • Adult Critical Care Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the adult critical care population.

  • Peri-Operative Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the peri-operative hospital population.

  • Adult Emergency Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the adult emergent care population.

  • Newborn Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the newborn population.

  • Pediatric Emergency and Critical Care Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the pediatric emergent and critical care population.

  • Psychiatry Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of nursing practice and standards related to the psychiatric hospital population.

  • Nursing Administrative Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of administrative practices and standards within nursing services.

  • Nursing Clinical Informatics Sub-Council

    Provides oversight of practices and standards related to electronic health information and documentation.
