Professional development program

Our Professional Development Program (PDP) is a structured system designed to promote RN career advancement, recognize professional development and differentiate levels of nursing expertise and contributions to University Healthcare and Clinics.

The Chief Nursing Executive Officer is ultimately responsible for the administration of this program, with the PDP Sub Council and the PDP Council functioning to provide guidelines and general oversight of the program. This program is open to eligible registered nurses as determined by the Nursing Governance Council.

Currently, there are three levels defined which qualified nurses may attain:

  • • Level I is for nurses with 0-12 months of experience.
  • • Level II A includes nurses with more than 12 months of experience who consistently demonstrate the behaviors outlined in the program.
  • • Level II B is optional with behaviors and activities outlined and points assigned to each. This level is achieved when approved activities total 10 points, and it is rewarded with an hourly increase in salary.

Two additional levels have been defined and proposed to recognize even higher levels of functioning. The proposed Level III and Level IV are outlined in the Nursing Administrative Policy Manual.

As nurses progress to higher and higher levels of the Professional Development Program, their knowledge and expertise are recognized and rewarded. This program provides a winning formula for nurses, UMMC and the community we serve.
