How do I find out more about University Physicians care providers?

More than 450 physicians representing more than 125 specialties make up University Physicians, the state’s largest medical practice. To locate a specific doctor and learn about specialty healthcare areas, click here. Request an appointment online or call (888) 815-2005.

Is there free parking?

Free parking is available at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on North State Street across from the main hospital. When that lot is full, parking can be found next to the Medical Towers building on South Stadium Circle as well as the Old Farmers Market lot.

Free shuttles run to and from the UMMC hospitals and clinics from 5:30 a.m.-midnight Monday-Friday. Shuttles to the Jackson Medical Mall operate from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. Service is not available on weekends or UMMC holidays. The 33-passenger blue buses are not equipped for disability equipment, such as wheelchairs. Two 14-passenger white buses with wheelchair lifts are available during regular shuttles. For more about handicapped transportation, call (601) 984-1513.

University Physicians Pavilion patients can park for free in the Pavilion Lot. Parking also is free at clinics located off the UMMC campus, including the Jackson Medical Mall.

Free valet parking is offered for day surgery and Heart Station patients. Valets are located at the main entrance of University Hospital. Hours are 5 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays.

Garage A offers easy access to University Hospital. Garage B is convenient to Conerly Critical Care Hospital, Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants and Batson Children’s Hospital. Lot C also is near Batson Children's Hospital, while lot D is situated on the north side of the campus.

Are paid parking spaces available?

Paid parking is available at garages A and B and lots C and D on the UMMC campus. Garage A offers easy access to University Hospital, and Garage B is convenient to Conerly Critical Care Hospital, Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants and Batson Children's Hospital. Lot C is near Batson Hospital, while lot D is situated on the north side of the campus.

Cost is 50 cents an hour with a maximum daily rate of $5. Valet parking is available at University Hospital for $7. Hours for valet service are 5 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; vehicles are parked in Garage B.

Discounted parking permits for patients (one vehicle per patient) can be purchased from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the UMMC business office, located on the first floor of the main hospital, and on weekends or nights at obstetrics receiving on the basement level of Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants. Cost is $3 for three days, $7 a week and $30 per month.

How do I get copies of my medical records?

To get copies of your medical records, you must first complete an Authorization for Release of Health Information form. Bring the completed form to the Release of Information area, located in room H145, which is behind the Business Office in the old hospital, or mail it to 2500 N. State St., Jackson, MS 39216, Attention Release of Information.

There is a copy charge for obtaining medical records. The cost is $1 per page for the first 25 pages, and 15 cents per page for every page thereafter. For more information, call (601) 984-4050.

  • For copies of a birth certificate, call the Mississippi Department of Health, Vital Statistics, at (601) 576-7981.
  • To obtain copies of your X-rays, call (601) 984-2530 and ask for a copy of the studies you need. To speed the process, fill out an Authorization for Release of Health Information Form and bring it with you when you come to pick up your studies.

Can I get a prescription filled or refilled?

There are three pharmacy locations for the convenience of patients seen by University Physicians’ care providers. Only prescriptions written by a UP provider will be filled.

Pharmacies at University Physicians Pavilion and Jackson Medical Mall are open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Meds & Threads, a pharmacy and retail shop with UMMC specialty items, is open from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

An automated phone line and an online service is available 24 hours a day for refill orders or order status.

Most prescription plans are honored. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are accepted are Meds & Threads and the Pavilion locations, while Visa and MasterCard are accepted at the Medical Mall.

When can I have visitors?

Visiting hours routinely are 9 a.m.-9 p.m., but certain units and floors may have more specific hours. Check with your nurse about visitation guidelines. We request only two visitors at a time, so that patients can get adequate rest. Clergy are welcome anytime at your request. For more about ICU guidelines, click here.

Where can I buy or borrow a book?

Two gift shops and a student bookstore have magazines and paperback books. UMMC also provides a library for patients and their families, and books and magazines can be checked out between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. For information, call (601) 984-2068.  

Is smoking allowed?

Smoking and the use of tobacco products are not allowed anywhere in UMMC facilities or on the UMMC campus. You may be eligible for tobacco replacement therapy (nicotine patches) during your hospital stay, so check with your doctor or nurse. Is there a worship area?

A non-denominational chapel is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday- Friday on the first floor of University Hospital. A quiet worship room directly across the hall from the chapel is open 24 hours a day. Chaplains also are available at a patient’s request.

Sunday worship services are held from 11-11:30 a.m. Sundays in the chapel. Chaplains can be reached after hours by calling (601) 984-1001. 

Does the hospital have wireless Internet? Can I bring a laptop computer?

Public wireless Internet is available for patients and visitors with laptops. UMMC is not responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings left unattended.

Can my visitor eat with me?

Meals are delivered to patients’ rooms three times a day according to dietary needs. Guests may purchase meal tickets at the main cafeteria to have an additional tray delivered to the room. A variety of dining choices are available off-campus.

Where can I find area lodging?

A variety of hotels, motels, inns and other lodging options are available in the metro Jackson area. The Circles® Concierge service at UMMC also maintains a list of places to stay and their general price range. Some hotels in the area offer discounts to UMMC and Batson Children's Hospital patients and their families. Please be sure and ask about any special offers when you make reservations..

What information is needed regarding insurance?

You should provide the policy number, group number (if available), insurance provider address and telephone number as well as the subscriber’s name, Social Security number, date of birth and relationship to the patient. Your insurance card provides additional useful information, so please bring it with you to each visit. We've provided a list of information plans currently accepted by UMMC.

What can I expect regarding billing?

You will receive a bill from the University Physicians doctor for services and a separate bill from University Hospitals and Health System for any hospital services. You may receive a bill from more than one physician depending on how many were involved or consulted on your behalf.

If you do not have insurance, you will be expected to make a deposit based on estimated charges before registration, unless you have emergency treatment. You will be expected to make full payment if insurance fails to pay in a timely manner or denies payment. Deductibles and co-pays are due at admission.

Bills can be paid over the phone with a credit card (all major cards accepted) or a debit card (with Visa or MasterCard logos). Payments also may be mailed to:

The hospital helps provide financial aid resources by referring patients to MedAssist, an agency that helps with governmental assistance such as Medicaid and disability, and through other resources. Call (601) 984-4640 for more information about patient accounts.
